Achieve the highest AGD honor Become a Master
Achieving Mastership is a professional designation
within the Academy of General Dentistry beyond FAGD
and reflects a general dentist's ongoing commitment to
provide quality care through continuing education.
A member achieving this distinction has completed a
challenging course of hands-on study in 16 dental
disciplines, totaling 600 hours of continuing
education. More than 1,300 members have gone on to
receive Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry
(MAGD), the highest distinction that a member can
achieve through our continuing education program.
Masters celebrate their professional accomplishment
during a Convocation ceremony and at the AGD Gala held
each year at the
Annual Meeting & Exposition.

The Master Class
Your Pathway to Mastership in Dentistry
The Maryland Academy of General Dentistry is proud to
sponsor the finest in continuing education for its
members. Our Master Class Program is developed to be
informative and comprehensive, and offering the best
in clinical presenters. Each class will allow each
participant an opportunity to utilize the lessons
learned to strengthen his or her practice.
The Master Class Program is organized to enable the
Academy of General Dentistry member to acquire
Fellowship and/or Mastership requirements in a timely
and organized manner. Each class segment provides an
exciting mix of continuing education, challenging
office assignments, professional growth, and the
development of new friendships around the state,
region, and nation.
MASTERSHIP TRACK COURSE FORMAT
The Maryland AGD Master Class meets in April and
November of each year. Each class meets Saturday
through Monday for the expert presentation. Each class
involves an in-practice assignment, which is to be
completed during the following six-month period and
presented on the Friday before the next Master Class
session. The presentation yields 48 participation
credit hours. If a presentation is not given at the
following session then the participant receives 24
hours of participation credit. Continuous presentation
attendance earns 96 participation credits per year,
covering all of the required topics, resulting in more
than the necessary 400 participation hours required
for Mastership at the end of the four-year cycle.
THE CASE PRESENTATION
The case presentation is an integral part of the
Master Class Program. Its purpose, for both pre-Fellow
and pre-Master participants, is to develop the skills
necessary to present information and treatment case
development to professional and public groups and at
the same time receive participation credit towards
mastership. Even though the pre-Fellows do not need
‘participation’ credit, per se. It provides an
excellent source for 48 credit hours in subjects
covering the entire oral health continuum, as well as
the educational experience of ‘presenting’ to a group
of your professional peers.
The case presentation must encompass the following
basic structure for acceptance towards the 48 hours of
participation credit:
1. Case presentations are done on Friday, the
first day of the following session, approximately six
months after the lecture assignment.
2. Presentations are limited to approximately
10 minutes unless special, prior approval is arranged
with the course director.
3. Presentations must be germane to the lecture
topic (s) and are assigned at the previous three-day
session.
4. Presentations must involve patients,
procedures, or processes done in the dentist’s
practice. Complete preoperative, treatment, and
postoperative records should be provided, including
informed consent and release forms.
5. The presentation will include any applicable
patient data including, but not limited to slides,
photographs, video, radiographs, and mounted models.
6. Presentations, which do not lend themselves
to the use of audio/video aids, should be presented in
a documentary style report with copies provided to all
participants present.
7. Every attempt should be made to increase the
quality of the presentation as the participant grows
with the course series.
8. If a presentation is not given, 24 hours of
lecture credit will be applied.
9. The Case Presentation is part of the overall
48 hours and attendance through all the presentations
is required.
10. Presentation is not a guarantee of the
assignment of participation credit. If the previously
listed criteria are not met to the satisfaction of the
course instructor and the CE Committee credit may be
denied.

credit application whenever the course content covers
a variety of subject code categories. This will be
based on the participant’s need and the assurance that
adequate hours in a specific subject are covered.
Credit application will be made following evaluation
by the Continuing Education Committee of the MAGD.
Requests for specific application of credits must be
made in writing to the Master Class Program Committee
Administrator within two (2) weeks from the date of
