Implant Treatment Planning and Treatment for Ailing/Failing Implants
With
Dr. Craig Misch

Dr. Craig M. Misch has received postgraduate certificates in prosthodontics and oral implantology as well as a Master of Dental Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Misch acted as Co-Director of the University of Pittsburgh Oral Implantology Center until he entered specialty training in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He completed this residency in 1999 and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He currently practices as a dual specialist in Sarasota, Florida.

Dr. Misch is a Clinical Associate Professor at New York University in the Department of Implant Dentistry. He also has faculty appointments at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Florida. Dr. Misch is a member of the editorial boards of Implant Dentistry and the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants. He has published and lectured extensively on the topics of reconstructive surgery, bone grafting, implant surgery and prosthodontics.

Long term health and maintenance of implant supported prostheses

This lecture will discuss the long term maintenance of the supporting bone and soft tissues around dental implants. Peri-implantitis is a destructive inflammatory process affecting the soft and hard tissues surrounding dental implants, much like periodontitis around natural teeth. The management of ailing implants is complicated by the difficulty in removing the biofilm from the implant surface and attempting to achieve “reosseointegration”. Many alterations in implant design have been introduced to better maintain marginal bone. Implant complications and failures will be discussed in detail including retreatment.
