Lasers in Dentistry:
Minimally Invasive Tools for the Modern Practice

Stephen Polhaus, DDS, FAGD

AGD 135 - Laser Therapy/Surgery

CE Credits: 8 Lecture/Participation

Course Description:

Dental lasers have been available for three decades. The technologies and techniques have evolved to the point where lasers offer advantages for provider and patient alike in all disciplines. The variety of lasers can be daunting for the dentist considering adding this exciting technology to their practice.

This course will describe all the major wavelengths available in dentistry and discuss the advantages and limitations of each one.

Clinical cases and scientific research will be presented to exhibit the advantages of laser procedures versus ones performed by bur and scalpel. Information will also be presented on the use of lasers for photobiomodulation to help treat a variety of oral conditions from aphthous stomatitis to TMD.

A hands-on session will be presented in the afternoon at the Baltimore Center for Laser Dentistry where participants will be able to learn about procedures in operative dentistry, periodontics, oral surgery, and oral diagnosis.

Learning Objectives:

Participants in this course will become knowledgeable in the following areas:

  • Understand the basic physics of laser light and its application to clinical care

  • Discuss the various forms of biological interactions of lasers

  • Become knowledgeable about the various laser wavelengths used in dentistry and their advantages and limitations

  • Be exposed to the use of lasers in operative dentistry, periodontics, oral diagnosis/medicine, and endodontics and understand the advantages versus traditional instrumentation
