This presentation provides an introduction to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the general requirements normally applicable in the dental setting. This is followed by a review of infection control and the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, OSHA requirements and CDC recommendations. The participants will be provided with recommendations and requirements for infection control prior to, during and after patient care. Basic fundamentals of the chain of infection and modes of transmission are reviewed, followed by a review of hand hygiene, PPE, surface disinfection and the Hazard Communication Standard, instrument processing, waterline maintenance and amalgam separators. Common myths and realities in the context of regulations, a culture of safety, recommendations and evidence-based infection control protocols will also be discussed during the presentation.
Participants in this course will gain knowledge in the following areas:
Describe the role of OSHA in helping to protect the health and safety of dental healthcare workers
List and describe relevant pathogens, precautions and practices falling under the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard
Define the steps that must be taken prior to, during and after treating each patient
Review hand hygiene and PPE requirements
Describe the treatment of environmental surfaces
List and describe the steps required during instrument processing and sterilization monitoring
List and describe options for the treatment and maintenance of dental unit waterlines
About the Speaker:
Dr. Collins has presented in North America, Europe, the Pacific Rim and the Middle East. She is a published author and speaker on topics including infection control and OSHA, the prevention and management of oral diseases and conditions, vaping and tobacco, the sugar epidemic and artificial sweeteners, pain management, HPV and dry mouth, and new products, technologies and diagnostics. Fiona has worked with organizations and publications to deliver on-point, thought-provoking and practical information that will enhance patient care and safety. Fiona is a consultant for the DENTAL ADVISOR, editor for Dental World, a trainer and CE contributor, editor and peer reviewer. She is the ADA representative to the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), a member of the ADA, Chicago Dental Society, the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP), a participant in Standards working groups and a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. During her career, Fiona has lived and worked in five countries, and has held positions in academia, private practice, consulting and industry. Dr. Collins graduated as a general dentist from the University of Glasgow and holds an MBA and an MA from Boston University.
