Course Description:

This three-hour lecture course is designed to refresh the dentist, dental hygienist, dental radiation technician, or dental assistant in the principles and concepts of clinical infection control and prevention.
Successful completion of this course will provide the participant with an understanding of the rationale for proper infection control policies and procedures necessary to prevent disease transmission in the dental office. Major topic areas to be covered include microbiology, disease prevention, principles and techniques of disinfection and sterilization, as well as chemical and waste management, regulatory and advisory agency oversight and dental unit waterlines safety.
The course is designed to help satisfy the annual training requirement for MOSH compliance as well as provide infection control continuing education credits required for Maryland dental renewal of license.
Course Objectives:
Participants in this course will gain knowledge in the following areas:

Describe the infection control techniques employed in a dental setting.

Understand the chain of infection and how it relates to disease prevention.

Identify and select personal protective equipment required in the dental setting.

Identify types of sterilization and disinfection used in the dental setting, as well as advantages and disadvantages of each.
About the Speaker:

Dr. Carlson received a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from West Virginia University School of Dentistry. After practicing general dentistry for 37 years, she retired in 2021 and currently serves on the faculty at Chesapeake College, where she has taught in the dental program since 2009. Additionally, she lectures and consults on Infection Control to dental practices and institutions across the state of Maryland.
Dr. Carlson holds a Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry as well as Fellowships in the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. In 2023, she earned the Association of Dental Safety's (formerly OSAP) designation of CDIPC, Certified in Dental Infection Prevention and Control.
Dr. Carlson serves as Vice-President and Editor of the Maryland Academy of General Dentistry. She was appointed to the Task Force on Oral Health in Maryland, representing the Maryland Community Colleges Association, and also holds a current position on the Pathways for Brighter Futures Advisory Committee, a nonprofit state program addressing Health Professional Shortage Areas (Dental HPSAs) in Maryland.
